Reader's note

This lovely edition of Daniel Deronda, complete in one volume, was written by Mary Ann Evans under the pen name of George Eliot. This book was ahead of it’s time and exposed Victorian anti-Semitism. The novel has overlapping narratives of two characters, Daniel Deronda; an intelligent and handsome young man of obscure origins who has been raised as part of the family of his loving guardian, and Sir Hugo Mallinger. The novel builds on the contrast between Mirah Cohen, a poor Jewish girl, and the upper-class Gwendolen Harleth, who marries for money and regrets it.
